Public Education in Support of Primary Healthcare Reform

Armenia

USAID 2005 – 2010

OSC led the Public Education, Health Promotion and Disease Prevention component of the Primary Health Care Reform project (PHCR) in Armenia. At the national level, OSC worked with the Ministry of Health to promote basic health services and free prescription benefits available to the general population, as well as strategic initiatives like population enrollment and family medicine. At the local level, OSC trained a cadre of NGOs that created and trained Community Health Committees (CHC) in rural Armenian communities. After completing two stages of capacity building, the CHCs executed health education activities in their communities on topics such as cardiovascular health, diabetes prevention, healthy diet and bones, and healthy lifestyle choices. Information was disseminated to the target audience with the innovative use of technologies like SMS.
